Hi All

Some advice please.

If you have a joint that is really painful i.e shoulder should I try and keep moving it or just rest it ? my instinct tells me to try and keep moving, although the pain is so bad that I keep crying out in pain.

Is it ok to use Deep heat ?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Anne,

Is your shoulder hot if so ice packs, or warm wheat bags. I wouldn't use deep heat, I am sure I have heard somewhere this is not good for RA joints. Ice packs are good if it is really hot to cool it down. But I also find the wheat bags good for pain.

Hope this is a help Lorna x

Hi Annie,
A wheat bag is something every RA sufferer should have. You can get them in most chemists. It simply is s bag filled with grains of wheat. You put it in the microwave for 2 minutes, it heats up and you use it like a hot water bottle - but it is much more flexible. I would not be without mine. It even goed to work with me on a bad daay.

Hi Anne

As Lorna says 'Deep Heat' is not recommended for RA it is more useful for muscular problems.

Ice packs can be good but wheat bags are more gentle and are possibly better at dealing with this type of inflammation. Ice packs are good for injuries where the inflammation comes on suddenly as it decreases the blood flow to the area.

Wheat bags contain things like lavender which once heated produce a long lasting heat. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes which you can apply to different parts of the body and you can even make your own! Just 'google' wheat bags and it will give you all sorts of information and where to buy!

It's best to rest the shoulder if possible, (perhaps using a sling), to help reduce inflammation. You will need to move it at intervals to stop the joint ceasing up. A case of trial and error to find what gives you most comfort.

If the problem continues you need to seek medical advice in case there is an underlying injury or perhaps a short course of anti inflammatories may help.
Good luck Anne

Definitely do not push any aching joint. Rest is always the best way to go, unless your physio or GP has told you something else.

Thanks All

Found a wheat bag in holland and barrett and I really like the lavender smell. It will be getting a lot of use in the coming few days.

Hi Anne

Can fully understand shoulder pain.

drives me mad at times couldnt even sit in a car and be driven at one point- agony.

when it is very very active YOU MUST REST IT. you CANNOT "work through" pain with RA- it is all over the occupational therapy and RA physio leaflets. If it is painful you must stop. You could do serious damage.

get a stab of steroid in there (preferably guided by ultrasound). Rest for 24 hrs. then gently move it.

ASK to see a physio and have them teach you the "full rotation". People with RA should really do this every day. Some rheumatologists recommend you try and do this once a day or every other day even in a flair.

Once you have got that shoulder jabbed and sorted out, I have found the most helpful exercise is hydrotherapy.

Actually hydrotherapy is fab for all the body.
